On August 23, 1970, the newly created PSG played its first official match in National. Half a century before his Cham League final

This Sunday, August 23, 2020 is already a historic day for PSG, competing for its first Champions League final. It could end in jubilation with a victory over the ogre of Bayern Munich, already five times European champion. But the date also coincides day to day with the first official match in the history of the club. Exactly fifty years ago, the newly created PSG from the merger between Paris FC and Stade Saint-Germain began its season in “National” (Division 2 at the time).

A first match, a first goal, a first point.

Not a poster against a cador from the 1970s, but at the Stade poitevin, now a resident of the anonymous National 3 (the 5th Division). A match played at the Pépinière stadium in front of 4022 people who came to witness the birth of this PSG. "We were the stars of the division and that's why people had responded," remembers striker Jean-Claude Bras, author of the first goal for PSG in a friendly match a few days earlier (August 1 against Quevilly at Stade Jean-Bouin).

"We hadn't been good"

For its official debut in the league, Paris had not won (1-1) and had suffered a lot until the opening of the score of Poitevin Alain Pédini (1-0, 30th). But Paris then reacted and finally put on a show with this free kick from Bernard Guignedoux at 16 m in the top corner of the goal defended by Guy Delhumeau, who will sign at… PSG the following season (1-1, 69th). A smooth start that will not prevent the Parisians from reaching the elite at the end of the season, with a first champion's trophy snatched from the other two promoted, Monaco and Lille.

“Frankly, apart from Chouki (Djorkaeff) and Bernard (Guignedoux), we had not been good, says Jean-Claude Bras. In the end, we secured the climb and the title in Rouen in a molten Diochon stadium. We celebrated that for twenty-four hours. First at Quick, a nightclub in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. We extended the party in the Banque de France swimming pool in Bougival. Some arrived on foot, and many ended up naked (laughs) . "
