PSG-Bayern: how much is a victory in the Champions League?

2020-08-23T05:16:15.911Z

Already assured of a jackpot of nearly 120 million euros, PSG could see its revenues climb by a few million euros. Without count

In the disaster context of the coronavirus, the army of accountants of the PSG can finally smile. The team's career has provided it with unprecedented manna in the history of its participation in the competition. And a success this Sunday against Bayern Munich could still raise the revenue column, even if it would cause other expenses which make some internal sources say that a defeat in the final brings more than a trophy.

The income distributed by UEFA, the organizer of the Champions League, is distributed transparently. Paris is already guaranteed to receive more than 120 million euros thanks to its accession to the final. In detail, he will receive 15.25 million euros in participation bonus, 14.4 million euros for his five victories and a draw in the group stage, as well as 47 million euros for his qualification during the following different laps until the final.

To this total, we must add 27.7 million euros related to its UEFA coefficient over the last ten seasons, stopped before the start of the competition (PSG was then 8th among the teams involved). Finally, at least 20 million euros will complete the addition, under TV rights, provided that the final format of the competition does not charge the revenues of the authorities in the matter.

A collective bonus of 500,000 euros per player

Beyond the indirect long-term repercussions which are difficult to quantify, a victory in the final adds "only" 4 million euros in bonus, as well as 3.5 or 4.5 million euros, later, in depending on the result of the European Supercup against the winner of the Europa League.

However, success also adds significant costs. Thus, PSG negotiated a collective performance bonus of 500,000 euros per player in the event of a trophy, according to L'Equipe. The bill would be heavy, given the 24 players used since the start of the competition, not to mention the staff members, some of whom are interested in the results. Several agents confirm to us, however, that individual performance bonuses in a competition are extremely rare. Depending on the clauses inserted in player purchases, PSG may also have to pay out certain bonuses in the event of success.

Parisian players could win on all fronts, since the sponsorship contracts of equipment manufacturers promise bonuses of several hundred thousand euros in bonuses to the stars of the workforce in the event of success in the Champions League.
