Sophia Popov, 304 of the world rankings - and winner of the British Open
Photo: Gene J. Puskar / APSophia Popov was the first German golfer to win a major tournament, completely surprising. The number 304 in the world rankings kept the competition in check on the last day of the British Open in Troon / Scotland and received prize money of 670,000 dollars (approx. 575,000 euros). A German had never won a total of 290 major tournaments since 1930.
Popov went into the final lap as the leader, where she successfully defended her lead to the end despite great pressure. In the end, the 27-year-old won with 277 (70 + 72 + 67 + 68) strokes ahead of Jasmine Suwannapura from Thailand (279). Caroline Masson (Gladbeck) rounded off the first-class German result as a shared seventh.
"To see my name up there would have been completely utopian a week or two ago. My friend Max is my caddy here, that helps," said American-born Popov before the last lap and suspected: "The last Day it just means: I against pressure. " It withstood this pressure and caused one of the biggest surprises in German golf history.
