Despite the Corona crisis, the athletes keep delivering top performances. The Norwegian Karsten Warholm shines over the 400 meter hurdles in Stockholm - European record! And vice world champion Armand Duplantis screwed his way up with the stick.
Stockholm (dpa) - The Norwegian Karsten Warholm ran a European record and the second fastest time in athletics history over 400 meters at the Diamond League meeting in Stockholm.
The two-time world champion won in 46.87 seconds, clearly ahead of Frenchman Wilfried Happio (49.14). Warholm had also held the old record, set on August 29, 2019 in Zurich, with 46.92.
The 23-year-old is only nine hundredths of a second short of the world record. The American Kevin Young has held it for 28 years with 46.78 seconds, set up when he won the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992.
High-flyer Armand Duplantis set a world record for the year with 6.01 meters in the pole vault. The 20-year-old Swede, who has been holding the world record at 6.18 meters since February and has an outdoor record of 6.05, held Belgian Ben Broeders (5.73) and world champion Sam Kendricks from the USA (5.53 ) safe in check. Former World Cup gold medalist Raphael Holzdeppe from Zweibrücken came in fifth on a weak 5.33 meters in his first international start in the Corona season.
In the 100-meter victory of Swiss Ajla del Ponte in 10.20 seconds, German sprint aces Rebekka Haase from Wetzlar (11.32) and Gina Lückenkemper (Berlin / 11.33) only finished fourth and fifth. The Diamond League continues on September 2nd in Lausanne.
