The former Canadian baseman, who concluded his outstanding playing career in 2014, will make his debut next season on the bench.

Steve Nash

returns to the NBA.

Six years after the Canadian guard ended his formidable playing career, the Brooklyn Nets have signed him as head coach for the next four seasons.

Nash, who has been on the Real Mallorca board of directors since 2016, joins the Nets' luxury project.

The team looks forward to next season with the two players on whom it has the highest ambitions, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.

Durant was injured in the finals last season while playing for Golden State.

He broke the Achilles tendon in his right foot.

At the end of the season he signed a contract for four years and a total of 164 million dollars.

This season he has not been able to play a single game.

A few days later and after his time with the Celtics, Kyrie Irving also signed for the Nets, with a contract of 135 million dollars and four years.

Irving also suffered a serious shoulder injury and has only been able to play 20 games this season, the last one on February 1.

The bet on Nash from Nets owner Joe Tsai and CEO Sean Marks has been somewhat surprising given the former baseman's lack of technical expertise.

"After meeting with a series of candidates for the coaching position, the decision was difficult," argues Marks, who coincided as a player with Nash when they both defended the Phoenix Suns jersey.

“In Steve we see a leader, communicator and mentor who will earn the respect of our players.

I have had the privilege of knowing Steve for many years.

One of the great leaders on the court in our game, I have witnessed his basketball first hand.

He possesses insight and an altruistic approach that prioritizes team success.

His instinct for the game, combined with an inherent ability to communicate and bring players together towards a common goal, will prepare us to compete at the highest levels in the league. "

Nash, now 46, retired in 2014 after a final season with the Lakers in which he barely played because of a back injury.

He was the NBA MVP twice, in 2005 and 2006. He was also an eight-time

All Star

and, in six seasons, the one with the most assists in the NBA.

It is the third most basket passes in the history of the competition (10,335), only surpassed by John Stockton (15,806) and Jason Kidd (12,091).

It was the

metronome

of that remembered Suns team with which he reached the Western Conference finals three times (2005, 2006 and 2010, when he lost to the Lakers of Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol).

The coach was Mike D'Antoni and the Suns covered the famous

run and gun

(run and shoot).

The Suns attack was pure speed, with a lot of freedom, a style that he fell in love with, with a team that included Nash, Joe Johnson, Quentin Richardson, Shawn Marion, Amare Stoudemire and Leandro Barbosa as sixth man.

The Nets, despite the numerous casualties they have suffered, have managed to contest the

playoffs

although they were swept by the Toronto Raptors (4-0) in the first round.

His only two titles were in 1974 and 1976, with Julius Erving as the main star.

The last two times they reached the final were in 2002 and 2003, with Jason Kidd as game director.
