The German javelin thrower Johannes Vetter is still in top form: At the athletics meeting in Chorzow, Poland, the 27-year-old managed the second-best throw in history.
After 97.76 meters, the spear hit the grass, only 72 centimeters shorter than the world record set by the Czech Jan Zelezny in 1996.
Nevertheless, it was enough for a German record.
Vetter exceeded his own best of 2017 by 3.32 meters.
Almost two weeks ago, the native of Dresden had already reached the 90-meter mark twice in Chorzow.
It was only at the beginning of August that Vetter had set the previous world annual record in Turku, Finland, with 91.49 meters, which he has now improved himself.
Vetter celebrated his greatest success so far at the 2017 World Cup in London.
There he won the gold medal with a distance of 89.89 meters.
At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Vetter finished in fourth place, when he was only six centimeters short of a medal.
At the World Athletics Championships last year, he won bronze and thus missed the chance to successfully defend his title as the second javelin thrower after Zelezny (1993 and 1995).
On September 13, Vetter will take part in the International Stadium Festival (Istaf) in Berlin.
