For the first time in his career, Alexander Zverev is in the last eight at the US Open.

In the round of 16, the 23-year-old German won 6: 2, 6: 2, 6: 1 against the unset Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

The match was over after 1:34 hours.

In the quarter-finals, Zverev will either face Borna Coric from Croatia, number 27 on the seeding list, or the Australian Jordan Thompson.

From the first rally, Zverev showed a dominant performance against his 21-year-old opponent, who is 99th in the ATP world rankings.

He served heavily and hardly made any mistakes.

After 58 minutes he won the second set.

"I showed very good quality in the first two sets," said Zverev.

At the beginning of the third set, Davidovich Fokina injured his ankle and needed treatment.

The Spaniard was able to continue the match, but could hardly resist.

After 1:34 hours, Zverev, who had reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January, transformed his first match point.

"It seems to be going for me, I mean, I'm in the quarter-finals," said the 23-year-old.

In the afternoon the German number one in the women, Angelique Kerber, was eliminated in two sets.

Against the 28th American Jennifer Brady, Kerber had no chance in the round of 16 and lost 1: 6, 4: 6.

Kerber thus missed the first Grand Slam quarter-finals since her Wimbledon victory in 2018.
