According to SPIEGEL information, various athletes were infected with Covid-19 at a training camp for the German Olympic boxing team in Sölden, Austria.

The first cold symptoms appeared on Tuesday.

On Wednesday evening it should have been clear: It is Covid-19.

According to participants in the training camp, all 18 athletes and several supervisors could be affected.

The general secretary of the German Boxing Association, Michael Müller, confirmed the outbreak to SPIEGEL.

He did not want to provide any information about the number of positive cases.

The team now has to stay in Sölden completely until the Tyrolean Health Office lifts the quarantine.

The training camp was supposed to end on Saturday.

According to Müller, the athletes have no strong symptoms and would train despite the illness.

According to SPIEGEL information, however, training is currently out of the question.

The planned participation in October at the Cologne Cup is still open.

While the athletes have to stay on site, several officials have meanwhile traveled back to Germany.

Müller confirmed that he himself had stayed with the teams in Sölden for four days.

Because a corona test was negative for him, he was allowed to leave.

The team doctor of the boxing association also admitted to having left the hotel.

He didn't want to give any information about the time.

Infected by Schalke 04 players?

The boxing association had quartered its athletes in a hotel in Längenfeld, where the Bundesliga club Schalke 04 had previously held a training camp.

Corona infections at Schalke had already occurred there at the end of August.

The players concerned were apparently still in the hotel when the boxers traveled there.

Active spokeswoman Nadine Apetz, who also tested positive in Salden, reports that the Schalke players concerned were accommodated in their hotel corridor: "We noticed that by chance because there was always food being placed in front of the room doors."

General Secretary Müller did not want to speculate whether the footballers could have infected the boxers: "I don't want to blame my colleagues."

On the other hand, there is a lack of understanding among the athletes that the association has not moved the training camp under these circumstances.
