Lewis Hamilton has secured the 95th pole position of his career.
In qualifying for the Tuscan Grand Prix in Mugello, Italy, the 35-year-old world champion once again drove away from the competition, while his Mercedes colleague Valtteri Bottas was only 0.059 seconds slower.
From third place on Sunday (3:10 p.m., live ticker: SPIEGEL.de; TV: RTL, Sky) the Dutchman Max Verstappen will start the race.
Behind him, Alexander Albon landed in the second Red Bull. The two Ferrari drivers landed nine places apart: Charles Leclerc finished fifth, Sebastian Vettel will start the 1000th Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 race from 14th place.
Vettel almost didn't even make it into the second qualifying phase of the fastest 15 drivers, with a lead of just 0.053 he escaped the premature end.
"I just don't get along so well with the car," said Vettel in an interview with Sky: "We're trying to take steps forward, tomorrow is a different day. But I don't expect any big surprises."
On Thursday it became known where the German will drive in the coming season: At the British racing team Aston Martin, which will take over Racing Point.
Racing Point made it into the top ten in Mugello, Sergio Pérez was sixth ahead of Vettel's future team-mate Lance Stroll.
Formula 1 has never been a guest in Mugello before, this race was only possible due to the Corona faults in the calendar - most drivers were largely unknown to the course in Tuscany, and initially Bottas apparently found better access than Hamilton in the Mercedes duel : The Finn was ahead in training, but when it came down to it, he had to admit defeat to the six-time world champion.
