Ilkay Gündogan has tested positive for the corona virus.
This was announced by his club Manchester City from the Premier League.
According to the club, the 29-year-old now has to go into a ten-day quarantine.
It is the first known Covid 19 infection of a German national player.
"Everyone at the club wishes Ilkay a speedy recovery," said the Manchester City statement.
This means that Gündogan will be absent from the Wolverhampton Wanderers season opener on Monday evening (9:15 p.m.), but the positive test should not have any further effects on this game.
The actual start of the new season in the previous week against Aston Villa had been postponed due to City's involvement in the Champions League in August.
The team in Riyad Mahrez and Aymeric Laporte had already reported two positive cases at the beginning of September.
Gündogan had last been on the field with the selection of the German Football Association (DFB) on September 3 and 6 in the Nations League against Spain and Switzerland.
