The game will be different, Werder will remain stable

2020-09-21T12:53:28.653Z

The first 90 minutes have been played and the first conclusions are drawn. The league is celebrating because there are spectators again - but how much longer? How much longer: You are asking yourself that again in Bremen.

A game day only - but at least a game day.

The gain in knowledge after 90 minutes of the 2020/2021 Bundesliga season can of course only be small.

Still, a few trends seem to be emerging - and fans of Werder Bremen in particular shouldn't relax.

Here are the three lessons learned from the 1st matchday of the season.

It's a different game with spectators

80,000 people fit into Dortmund's Westfalenstadion, on Saturday against Borussia Mönchengladbach (3-0) there were 9,300 spectators in the arena.

But the soundscape sounded like 30,000.

For long stretches of the game you almost had the feeling that a normal Dortmund home game was taking place here.

The team and the audience motivated each other.

There was no better way to feel how different and how poor ghost games are than at the Borussia duel.

The game changes with the audience, and that applies primarily to clubs like BVB, for which fan support has always been a factor in sporting success.

FC Bayern, on the other hand, obviously no longer needs spectators to call up their best performance - you can't ask for more than an 8-0 win against Schalke 04, even with a full Fröttmaninger Arena.

Everywhere at the weekend the great joy of being able to play in front of fans again was praised.

In addition, little had to be reported about violations of the distance and hygiene rules in the stadiums: the fans largely adhered to the regulations.

The corona-related lockouts in Munich and Cologne have shown at the same time what fragile structure it is all about.

We currently have a sunny September with warm temperatures.

Now comes autumn, then winter, the classic time of infection.

It would be a bit of a miracle if there were game days on which seven out of nine spectators were allowed to enter the stadium.

In order to vary a common position of the sports speaker, the league has to think from game day to game day this season.

The Bundesliga is going through puberty

Do you know Paul Nebel?

Or rather: did you know him before this Bundesliga weekend?

Fog was brought into play for Jean-Philippe Mateta in minutes 90 + 3 at Mainz 05, but naturally he couldn't draw any particular attention afterwards.

Nevertheless, he has secured an entry in the club's chronicle.

At 17 years and eleven months, he is the youngest Bundesliga player the club has ever played.

Fog stands for a trend.

The league is getting a little bit younger again: There have been 17-year-olds every now and then in the past few years, but the accumulation in which they were mentioned on this match day is striking.

At Borussia Dortmund, Gio Reyna and Jude Bellingham, two 17-year-olds already have important roles in the team, but in Dortmund this has a certain tradition and is part of the BVB business model.

Four Borussia players are among the top ten youngest Bundesliga players in history.

At Bayer Leverkusen, hopes rest on Florian Wirtz, 17, and FC Bayern has had a 17-year-old goal scorer with Jamal Musiala since Friday.

The old saying that talents are not used because the established do not give them any space has long ceased to apply.

The fact that teenagers already take on such responsibility in top teams like Reyna and Bellingham in Dortmund, like Wirtz and before him Kai Havertz in Leverkusen, is something that the league will still get used to and get used to.

You can rely on Werder

Everything should be different, nothing got better: On the first matchday, Werder Bremen showed a disturbing consistency in the 1: 4 against Hertha BSC compared to the previous season.

Again, far too little happened on the offensive, again Werder fell behind due to defensive negligence, again there was hardly any rebellion - all known patterns from the 2019/2020 season.

Déjà-vu in the Weser Stadium.

The old problems in the squad came to light again against a Hertha team that was by no means outstanding.

A creative mind is missing in midfield, the defense is only limited by first division standards, and the same applies to the storm.

Werder would have to urgently strengthen the team, especially in midfield, in this transfer period, but some players from the big squad would have to be sold beforehand in order to create the financial scope for obligations.

At the moment everything is blocked.

After Hertha BSC, the at least as long-suffering FC Schalke - Sky and the DFL made the game the top game (!) Of the day - Arminia Bielefeld and SC Freiburg at Werder are waiting on Saturday.

If you don't score in these weeks, when?

And of course: If the shortcomings of the previous season reappear this season, the coach question will arise.

And nobody needs to be surprised.
