The Italian Filippo Ganna won the time trial title at the Road World Championships in Imola.
On the 31.7-kilometer circuit around the Italian Formula 1 racetrack, the 24-year-old cleared his rivals by 26 seconds in 35: 54.10 minutes.
Wout van Aert from Belgium won silver, bronze went to Stefan Küng from Switzerland.
Ganna drove an average of 52.798 km / h.
It was a surprising success, despite his national titles in 2019 and 2020, the Ineos driver had hardly made an appearance on the road.
On the track, however, all the more: In 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020 Ganna became world champion in the single pursuit.
Numerous highly regarded street stars, however, missed the first three places: The Briton Geraint Thomas finished fourth, defending champion Rohan Dennis from Australia was fifth and could not defend his title, which he had previously won twice in a row.
World hour record holder Victor Campenaerts finished eighth, ex-world champion Tom Dumoulin from the Netherlands tenth.
As expected, the German team had nothing to do with the medal ranks without four-time world champion Tony Martin.
Jasha Sütterlin took 16th place, Max Walscheid came 19th.
