Last season, whenever Real Madrid needed a decisive goal - Sergio Ramos was there to save it.
The same thing happened tonight (Saturday), when the captain scored in the 82nd minute from the penalty spot, giving the champion its first victory of the season - 2: 3 over Betis.
The Blancos have already found themselves 2: 1 behind, but have also been helped by the screens, just like last season.
Emerson Matisse was sent off in the 67th minute after a foul on Luka Jovic, a quarter of an hour later the decisive penalty came, again with the help of the VAR, after a touch by Mark Bartra in the box.
Former Spanish referee Ituralda Gonzalez claimed these were the right decisions: "It's an offense and a red card," he said of Emerson's foul;
"The ball touched the hand, it's a penalty," he said of the extra move.
Another past referee, Anduhar Oliver, agreed and told Marca: "Proper clearance, the Brazilian did not commit a foul but he prevented a clear chance for goal. As for Pendel, the VAR shows a player in the flight reaches out."
The media in Barcelona thought differently.
"Real Madrid and VAR have beaten Betis," the Mundo Deportivo wrote.
A post-match column claimed that the referees saved Zidane with "controversial decisions, to say the least. History repeats itself - another season has begun and the VAR covers up Real Madrid's mistakes".

"It was a very difficult game," Zidane concluded.
"The players gave everything and these are three very important points. I am satisfied. We have a long season and it is clear to us that we need to improve. We will do that. They said we did not score much, but tonight we scored three and could have scored more. Thibaut Courtois was great for us, as many times before "I am satisfied with the staff I have, we are who we are and we will try to provide a good season."
Tonight's hero Sergio Ramos added: "In the first 15 minutes we were very good, but after the first goal we gave up the ball. In the second half we wanted to make a comeback, and that's what we did. But we can not make comebacks every week, we have to learn from our mistakes."
On the refereeing decisions tonight, the captain said: "I will have to see them again, but from what I was told, Pendel was clear. Sometimes the referees hurt us, sometimes they help us. I do not think it was done on purpose in the first place."
