Bernd Leno has given Arsenal FC a victory in the League Cup round of 16 at English champions Liverpool FC.

The German goalkeeper was the match winner at Anfield Road in a 5-4 penalty shootout with two saved shots.

After 90 minutes it was 0-0 in an uneventful game.

Leno saved Divock Origi's and Harry Wilson's penalties, Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian was only able to parry against Mohamed Elneny.

The Gunners returned the favor just three days after the 3-1 defeat in the league game at the champions.

However, Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp and his counterpart Mikel Arteta spared numerous regular players.

Last season, Liverpool won the league cup on penalties against Arsenal.

At that time, both clubs had delivered a spectacle in regular time at 5: 5.

For the Reds, who won their first championship in 30 years after the month-long Corona break, it was the second competitive defeat of the current season.

In the Community Shield, the team also lost 5-6 on penalties against Arsenal at the end of August.

However, things are going better in the Premier League: After three match days, the defending champion is in second place with nine points.

In mid-October, the Reds also start in the premier class.

The 2019 Champions League winner will face Ajax Amsterdam, Atalanta Bergamo and FC Midtjylland in the group stage.

Arsenal does not qualify for the competition.
