The former world class decathlete Rico Freimuth from SV Halle has ended his career.
"I always thought that this day was going to be a sad one, but I'm actually quite happy and it seems like a relief for me. 15 years of competitive sport have demanded everything mentally and physically, so I'm happy to say: It is End, "said the 32-year-old on Thursday in a message from the TV channel Eurosport.
His greatest successes were World Cup silver in 2017 in London and bronze in Beijing in 2015.
At the Olympic Games in London in 2012, the native of Potsdam took sixth place as the best German.
Freimuth's personal best is 8663 points.
In September last year he suffered a cruciate ligament tear.
He had been plagued by injuries before.
Freimuth now wants to accelerate his studies of economics by submitting his bachelor thesis and is also becoming a TV expert for Eurosport.
At the Olympic Games in Tokyo next year, he will be part of the station's athletics team.
