Four broken ribs and one fracture on his left hand: The Kenyan long-distance runner Edwin Mokua (28) is currently recovering from a hippopotamus attack in the Nyahururu hospital.

Local media reports that Mokua, who won the half-marathon in Trabzon, Turkey that year, came across a herd of hippos and was attacked by an animal during a training run earlier this week on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River.

"I ran past the animals, but didn't see him again when I looked around seconds later," said Denis Kipkoskei, who trained with Mokua, the Daily Nation newspaper.

Then he saw Mokua "fight" with the hippopotamus to "free" himself.

Kipkoskei then scared away the rest of the animals "before I focused on what attacked him."
