The newcomer didn't have much time to hire his people.

And yet you noticed the Schalke three days after Manuel Baum was signed that he had given them self-confidence.

Not running, but also playing yourself, according to your own potential, seemed to have been the plan on his coaching debut against RB Leipzig.

But the strategy only worked for a short time.

Then Leipzig's offensive force came to bear - and ultimately overwhelmed Schalke at 4-0 (3-0).

Everything had started promisingly.

Schalke played bravely at first and even dared to move forward in the person of Suat Serdar and Mark Uth, but were mainly defensively compact and did not allow much at first, even if there were some problems with the Leipzig pacemakers.

Then Serdar injured himself and limped off the pitch with the jersey pulled over his face (23rd minute).

Schalke's offensive efforts were so badly dampened, from then on the guests initially focused on defending.

Leipzig did not yet know how to translate their superior ball possession into opportunities and opportunities.

But the team of coach Julian Nagelsmann increased the pressure - when Dani Olmo played after a Schalke ball loss on the right side to Kevin Kampl and who in turn dropped on Emil Forsberg, it was probably too fast for Schalke: Matija Nastasic falsified and finally he shot 19-year-old Can Bozdogan has just been substituted in when he tried to rescue his own network (32nd).

The goal broke Schalke's self-confidence.

Leipzig ran up and came quickly to goals two and three, first by Jose Angelino (35th), then by Willi Orban (45th + 2).

The next setback from Schalke followed at the break: goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann, until then Schalke with the most ball contacts, had to be replaced with muscle problems.

In the second half Leipzig came up with further chances, but did not maintain the intensity of the first round in terms of forward thrust and speed.

The team had several chances, but left it out of the game with the three hits from the first round.

Marcel Halstenberg (80.) finished from the penalty spot after a handball was punished.

Manuel Baum was introduced at Schalke 04 on Wednesday as the successor to the released David Wagner.

The team had started the new season with 1:11 goals and zero points - more badly than any other club in 58 years of the Bundesliga.

Now Schalke 04 is at the bottom of the table and the balance has gotten even worse.
