Because of the increasing number of people infected with corona, the basketball players at TSV Jahn Freising are withdrawing their teams from play - except for one team.

Freising

 - It was a difficult decision - but it was unavoidable: Due to the increasing number of people infected with corona, the basketball players at TSV Jahn Freising are withdrawing their youth and adult teams from playing.

Only the Bayernliga team should continue to hunt for the basketball because the risk of relegation is too great in sporting and financial terms, the department management announced.

In a press conference on Monday evening, Jahn chairman Franz Lupp and the department heads Julia Grabenweger and Michaela Ruis explained the serious step of stopping gaming.

This decision was not made at short notice, emphasized Lupp.

About two weeks ago, Grabenweger created a very complex hygiene catalog for gaming, he looked back.

However, it became clear how difficult this was to implement - and above all what responsibility the association is faced with.

“Youngsters who will graduate from school next year or club members who work in systemically relevant professions play in our teams.

We cannot send them to games in other cities weekend after weekend in view of the rising incidence and the associated risk of contracting the coronavirus. "

Quarantine is an important factor

The quarantine requirement was a decisive factor in this decision.

Because if there is a positive case in a home or away game, then everyone involved in the game must be quarantined for 14 days.

"The Freising volleyball team's regional league team already had this case," emphasized club boss Lupp.

"That gave us food for thought."

The basketball division therefore asked all teams last week whether they wanted to keep the game going.

"Most of the players were in favor of hiring him," said Ruis.

The men's first team should, however, continue to play in the Bayernliga.

It is currently unclear what consequences it would have if the team no longer competed, said Ruis.

You absolutely want to prevent a relegation from the Bayern League.

"However, one player from our team has canceled due to the increasing incidence," explained the Jahn department head.

TSV Jahn Freising: Harsh criticism of the association

Meanwhile, Lupp, Grabenweger and Ruis criticized the Bavarian Basketball Association: “Last week we sent a letter to the association's presidium describing our situation - with a request for an opinion.

However, we have not received an answer.

That is astonishing - because with our 16 teams we are one of the largest clubs in Bavaria.

I would have hoped for some kind of reaction ”, Ruis was more than irritated.

“We feel left alone.” Lupp is convinced that the association believed that it would satisfy everyone if the game continued: “For the association, it only seems important that Bayern Munich become German champions.

The functionaries seem to have lost touch with the base. "

Those responsible at TSV Jahn hope that their decision will motivate other clubs to also stop playing in order to put pressure on the association.

However, there are concerns that this move could have negative effects.

"Some Munich basketball clubs do not dare to stop playing because they fear that many young people could then migrate to clubs that keep the business going," Grabenweger found out.

It remains to be seen whether young TSV Jahn players will also lose their appetite.

"I think we made the right decision."

In Freising, it is hoped that this decision will also take some social pressure off the teams.

"Imagine that some parents no longer allow their children to take part in games - and the others are allowed to continue playing," Lupp points out.

The association therefore wants to do everything possible to at least be able to carry out training operations, in order to be able to offer the young people a meaningful activity in their free time.

“I think we made the right decision to keep the club's peace,” said Jahn chairman Franz Lupp with conviction.

He also makes it clear, however, that the pandemic is anything but easy for the volunteers: "Corona eats up a lot of time - and it is currently not that much fun to volunteer in a sports club."
