At the German tennis summit in Cologne, US Open finalist Alexander Zverev and his brother Mischa lost to the doubles Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies.
The Zverevs lost to the French Open winners in the quarterfinals of the second ATP tournament in the Lanxess Arena 4: 6, 5: 7.
Alexander Zverev can continue to play singles in the tournament and become a double winner in Cologne with three more wins.
The 23-year-old world number seven had won the first Cologne tournament on Sunday, on Friday the top seed will play against the French Adrian Mannarino for a place in the semi-finals.
Zverev is aiming for his 13th title on the ATP tour, in Germany he has triumphed three times so far.
Brother Mischa had not qualified for the main field of the Cologne individual competition.
"KraMies", as the opponents of the Zverevs are called, will meet the Brazilian-Polish ex-Wimbledon winners Marcelo Melo and Lukasz Kubot or Marcus Daniell / Philipp Oswald (New Zealand / Austria) in the semi-finals on Friday.
It was their first appearance at the tournament, on Wednesday they reached the quarter-finals without a fight due to an injury in the opposing team.
The best German double has not yet celebrated a tournament victory at home.
