Maccabi Tel Aviv presents Alexander Peshich (the official website of Maccabi Tel Aviv)

When Jaime Romero went out with Real Madrid for a friendly match against Paris Saint-Germain in January 2014, he certainly did not dream that the roads would lead him to the Azerbaijani Carbah.

When he came on as a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo with the opening of the second half and provided some nice moves in a 0-1 win, he certainly did not think that today a sports journalist from Spain would call him mainly to tell them about the life of a footballer in a country at war.

But the 30-year-old winger probably had to travel as far as Azerbaijan to escape the curse of the league relegation that stuck with him and refused to leave.

After all, along with Naftachi Baku, Karabakh is the team that has won the most championships and when he signed with the media, Romero finally replaced the bottom of the well with unfamiliar peaks air.

Air Peaks which also includes appearances in the Europa League and a game against Maccabi Tel Aviv tonight in the desolate Bloomfield (22:00, Sport 3).

Players like Fabio Pacia, Marcus Bennett, Sebastian Basung and Robert Green have been relegated four times during their careers.

But Jaime Romero overshadows them.

At the age of 30, he has five league relegations on his resume (to be fair, he is not the only one with such a number).

10 appearances and dropout for Serie B. Romero in white, in Barry uniform (Photo: Giuseppe Bellini, GettyImages)

Jaime Romero was born in Albacete and played for the local youth team.

At the age of 18 he had already become a key player in the senior team and was invited to the squad of the Spanish youth team.

Udinese paid him 1.8 million euros and he managed to record four appearances in the media - including 33 minutes against Juventus - before she started lending him to gain experience.

The first drop:

In the 2010/11 season Udinese loaned Romero to Barry.

In the first months of the season he suffered an injury and later made 10 appearances in the league.

Barry finished the season in last place in Serie A and returned to Serie B after two years.

The second decline:

In January 2013, after a year and a half in Granada that was under the same ownership of Udinese, Romero was sent on loan to Ordospor.

The Turks finished in 17th place out of 18 and relegated to the sub-league, the Spaniard made 11 appearances and did not score or cook.

The third drop:

Romero was unable to find his place in Udinese and was also loaned out in the 2013/14 season - this time to Real Madrid Castilla (Real Madrid's reserve team).

He trained from time to time with the senior team and recorded a good season personally in the Spanish sub-league, but in the last round of the season Castilla lost 1-0 to Murcia and were relegated to the third division.

Fourth decline:

Over the years both Udinese and Romero realized they were not meant to be together and in 2016 he ended his contract without playing for the Italian team since December 2009. He signed for Osasuna in the Spanish top league, recorded games against Valencia and Real Madrid, and partnered in 19 games .

But the team from Pamplona recorded a terrible season of 22 points and went down long before the last buzzer of the 2016/17 season.

Fifth drop:

In the summer of 2017 the pretentious Cordoba paid Osausna about half a million euros for Romero.

At the age of 27 he finally found a team willing to give him the keys, hoping he would march it to the struggles of promotion to La Liga.

In the reality test it was a failure.

Romero did not live up to expectations, was loaned to the little logo for half a season, returned to Córdoba and at the end of the 2018/19 season was relegated with it to the third division in Spain.

In Córdoba one of the media even called it "the worst imprint of the century".

Romero's two years in Cordoba were considered a resounding failure.

He was bought for half a million euros and received one of the highest salaries in the group: about 220,000 euros net per season.

The local media marked him as one of the symbols of the relegation of the league and the deteriorating economic situation of the club and in one of the media even called it "the worst signing of the century".

And he heard the voices.

In the summer of 2019, after being relegated for the fifth time in his career and with his current team determined to get rid of an unlikely contract in the third division in Spain, Romeo faced a crossroads.

He had offers from the second division in his homeland, but he decided enough was enough.

Carbah made a generous offer and the Spaniard probably had less than two minutes to realize that there he would meet a new side of the table - its top.

In Azerbaijan Romero found his place and became one of the stars of the team.

He won the first championship of his career, scored and cooked in the early stages of ground factories, met Sevilla twice in the Europa League and tonight will start another campaign, this time against Maccabi Tel Aviv.

In recent weeks, news has surfaced in Azerbaijan that he has an interest on the part of several small teams from the top league in Turkey, but in the meantime he does not seem to be rushing anywhere.

Just a few more ambitions of air peaks.
