Managing Director Christian Seifert will leave the German Football League after his contract expires in 2022.
"These are challenging times that demand clarity and reliability. This applies to the DFL as a whole and also to my professional ambitions. That is why I informed Mr. Peter Peters, as chairman of the supervisory board, that I would join the DFL after my contract expired June 2022, "said Seifert in a personal statement.
First "Bild" newspaper reported that the boss of the umbrella organization of the 36 professional clubs will not extend his contract, which will expire on June 30, 2022.
Peters, as chairman of the supervisory board of DFL GmbH, is said to have informed the presidium and the supervisory board of the 51-year-old Seifert's decision on Sunday evening.
"This decision is already important now, so that the supervisory board has the opportunity at an early stage to incorporate this fact into considerations about the future organization of DFL GmbH," explained Seifert.
He wants to open a new professional chapter in two years.
"Until then, I will of course continue to focus on current and future challenges in my DFL functions with great ambition and full commitment," he said.
Seifert has been working for the DFL since 2005 and has achieved considerable success during his tenure.
The marketing of the TV rights increased during his tenure from 400 million euros per season to more than one billion euros.
During the Corona crisis, it was possible for the Bundesliga to be the first of the major sports leagues worldwide to be able to resume gaming with a DFL hygiene concept.
The top manager recently resigned from his position on the Presidential Committee of the German Football Association (DFB).
According to media reports, Seifert officially justified his withdrawal with the fact that he lacked the time due to the corona problem to be able to adequately deal with the wide-ranging DFB topics.
