Spanish newspaper Sport said today that Barcelona club president Josep Maria Bartomeu has submitted his resignation.
Bartomeu faced increasing anger last year due to the club's deteriorating financial conditions and the decline in the team's performance on the field, which was evident in the humiliating 8-2 defeat by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final last August.
Bartomeu was also widely criticized for asking Lionel Messi to leave the club after the unfortunate defeat in the Champions League and he was facing a no-confidence vote.
Bartomeu took over the Barcelona presidency from Sandro Rosell in 2014.
