Borussia Dortmund: It doesn't work without Mats Hummels

No player is currently more important to BVB than Mats Hummels. When he won in Bielefeld, he scored both goals - but then he was injured. Now begins a race against time until the duel with Bayern.

The doctor, according to Lucien Favre, doesn't know anything either, so as a coach he can't say anything about Mats Hummels' injury.

The player then created the bulletin himself. "It tightened in the thigh. Fortunately, I didn't feel a stitch, which is a good sign," said Hummels, "but the thigh is firm. You will now be working on it for a few days I hope to win the race against time by Wednesday. "

For all those who are well-disposed towards Hummels and Borussia Dortmund, it would probably be enough if the race was won by Saturday.

That would mean that Hummels would be missing in the Champions League at Club Bruges (Wednesday, 9 p.m., TV: Sky), but he would then be ready for the top game in the Bundesliga: Dortmund against Bayern, the table runner-up against the leader (Saturday , 6.30 p.m., TV: Sky).

Hummels decides games

Mats Hummels' thighs played a major role in BVB's game at Arminia Bielefeld before the right one forced the substitution.

After a corner kick in the 53rd minute, the ball slipped from the left to Hummels' right thigh, and from there into the goal.

Once again, it took until the second half for the Dortmunders to convert their towering superiority into a goal.

The game in East Westphalia showed astonishing parallels to the Revierderby against FC Schalke 04 (3: 0) and the game in the Champions League against Zenit St. Petersburg (2: 0).

Again, BVB only met after the breaks, the opponents did not have any good chances to score, and Hummels was convincing.

Since he had already scored a goal against Schalke - also after a corner kick - he is now at three goals this season.

That's three times as much as Jadon Sancho, Julian Brandt, Thorgan Hazard and Marco Reus achieved together.

This quartet should replace Erling Haaland in Bielefeld.

Again and again they changed positions so that everyone acted in the center of the storm.

But the four small Haalands (none larger than 1.85 meters) are not enough for the Norwegian in the end, at least not currently.

This could be seen with a header from Sancho, which Hummels had made possible with a fine cross on the outside of the instep.

How it works, the central defender showed the attacker in the 71st minute.

Reus cross, Hummels headed the ball - 2-0.

"He's in top form. He's playing really well at the moment," said Favre, praising the man who commands the BVB team.

Hummels will be 32 years old in December.

He is now playing for the second season at Borussia, which paid about 30 million euros for him to FC Bayern in the summer of 2019.

She wanted to sign a central defender who above all increases the quality of the game opening and reduces the vulnerability to opposing set pieces.

Hummels is currently in a phase in which he succeeds far more than that: Dortmund only conceded two goals in six Bundesliga games (at 2-0 in Augsburg).

With a success rate of a good 70 percent, Hummels is the second best two-fighter in the league, and when it comes to ball contacts (604 in six games) he is even right at the front.

"It has good healing meat"

The pass rate for the game in Bielefeld was 90 percent, while his neighbor Manuel Akanji was 98. But this statistic is always misleading in the case of Hummels, because he seeks the risky pass much more often than others, the long one behind the defensive chain of the opponent.

Hummels is currently the defining player at BVB.

Should he fail, coach Favre would also have to adjust the style of play, because only Dan-Axel Zagadou has similar skills in the opening.

The young Frenchman is still out due to an injury.

Emre Can is still ill with Covid-19, his return uncertain.

Lukasz Piszczek and Thomas Delaney can play as central defenders, but are qualitatively far from Hummels.

His failure in the top game against FC Bayern would also curtail BVB tactically.

Without Hummels, a return to the back three, which would be conceivable against the Munich offensive force, would hardly be possible.

The race should therefore be won by Saturday at the latest.

Julian Brandt relies on his colleague: "He'll manage it, he has good medicinal meat."
