Another serious setback for the former Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki: The 31-year-old suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in her left knee at the WTA tournament in Linz and has already had an operation.

Lisicki announced this on social networks.

"From now on we only look ahead," she wrote on Twitter.

"I have a long and hard road to come back now, but I am very fortunate to be surrounded by the best medical team."

The accident happened on Monday in the doubles competition.

At the side of her British doubles partner Jodie Burrage, Lisicki was injured when the score was 6: 5 in the first round duel, immediately grabbed her knee and had to give up.

An MRI examination in the evening then brought the diagnosis.

Lisicki, who still holds the record for the highest measured service speed in women's tennis (211 km / h), celebrated her first victory again after more than a year of abstinence from the tour at the end of August.

Previously, she had had glandular fever since July 2019.

Lisicki has repeatedly been thrown back from injuries in her career.

Not only the knee, but also the ankle and shoulder were affected.

This is one of the reasons why it is now only ranked 690 in the world rankings.

It achieved its best placement in 2012 (12th place).

The greatest success was seven years ago

Alongside Julia Görges (32 years old, career ended), Andrea Petkovic (33 years old, still active) and Angelique Kerber (32 years old, still active), Lisicki was one of the most promising talents in German women's tennis for a long time.

Between 2009 and 2014 she won four tournaments on the WTA tour.

She celebrated her greatest success in 2013. In Wimbledon - at what is probably the most important tennis tournament in the world - after victories against Serena Williams, among others, she was the first German to reach the final since Steffi Graf.

There she was defeated by the French Marion Bartoli in two clear sentences.
