The International Cycling Union (UCI) has imposed a nine-month suspension on the Dutch cyclist Dylan Groenewegen for causing the serious accident of his compatriot Fabio Jakobsen in the Tour of Poland, which was raced in August.
The brutal fall caused an international upheaval in the cycling world.
Jakobsen, 23, ended up in an induced coma after hitting the fences after being pushed by Groenewegen in a sprint finish at more than 50 miles per hour.
Back in the day, the UCI strongly condemned the dangerous behavior of Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo-Wisma).
“The UCI, which considers this behavior unacceptable, immediately referred the matter to its Disciplinary Commission to request the imposition of sanctions comparable to the seriousness of the facts.
Our federation is wholeheartedly with the affected cyclists, "he wrote in a statement at the time.
The sanction has arrived and has been made public this Wednesday.
Groenewegen, who acknowledged that he deviated from his line and committed a violation of UCI regulations, collaborated with the investigation and agreed to serve a suspension deadline until May 7, 2021: a total of nine months from the date of the accident.
The cyclist, always according to the UCI, also agreed to participate in a series of events for the benefit of the cycling community.
In addition, the international federation wanted to highlight the "importance of acting in these incidents from a disciplinary point of view in a fair and consistent manner", as well as its intention to "continuously work on measures aimed at improving road safety."
Jakobsen, who suffered several serious injuries and was in an induced coma, underwent surgery on his face.
Brain and spinal injuries were ruled out.
The Dutch cyclist recently announced that he will soon train with the bicycle again, but his recovery process continues and he will have to undergo surgery again in 2021.
