Professional cyclist Dylan Groenewegen was banned for nine months after his reckless maneuver against the badly fallen Fabio Jakobsen on the Tour of Poland in August.
This was announced by the world association UCI.
Accordingly, the Dutchman has to take a break until May 7, 2021.
Groenewegen showed himself to be cooperative in the investigation of the incident and accepted the ban, the UCI said.
The 27-year-old from the Jumbo-Visma team pushed his compatriot into the barricade at high speed in the finish sprint of the first stage of the Tour of Poland.
Jakobsen was critically injured and had to be operated on for five hours.
He was then in an artificial coma for two days.
"I've never seen anything like it in my career," said Marcel Kittel at the time of the incident to SPIEGEL.
"Fabio was sewn with 130 stitches on his face. He only has one tooth, his palate has still not healed and one of his vocal cords is still paralyzed. He still cannot breathe properly," said team boss Patrick Lefevere about Jakobsen at the time who had to have another operation in October.
Groenewegen has also not contested a race since the accident in which he suffered a collarbone injury.
"The fall will always be a black spot in my career," wrote Groenewegen after the verdict was announced on Instagram.
He is following the news of Jacob's recovery closely and hopes "that one day he can return completely healthy."
The conclusion of the proceedings gives him the "opportunity to look ahead again".
