US golf star Dustin Johnson won the traditional Masters in Augusta for the first time.

The world number one played a final round of 68 on Sunday and thus achieved a record result of a total of 268 strokes.

With 20 strokes under par, he improved the Masters record of Jordan Spieth (2015) and Tiger Woods (1997) by two strokes.

Second place at the 84th Masters went to debutant Im Sungjae and Australian Cameron Smith (both 273 strokes).

"I was tense all day. The Masters means a lot to me. It's the biggest tournament for me and I really wanted to win it. It's a dream for me," said Johnson, who was second in 2019.

He grew up about a hundred kilometers away from Augusta.

For Johnson it was only the second major success after his US Open victory in 2016. For his 24th victory on the lucrative PGA Tour, the 33-year-old not only received the coveted green jacket, but also won two million dollars in prize money .

Johnson had only returned to the tour about a week ago after contracting corona.

In his last seven tournaments, Johnson was three times first and second.

No one else is currently playing as consistently as he is.

Longer than Woods

Germany's golf star Bernhard Langer ended up playing a 71 round on the par 72 course on Magnolia Lane and finished the event, endowed with 11.5 million US dollars, with 285 strokes on a shared 29th place.

The 63-year-old from Anhausen had set a record at his 37th Masters participation and made the cut as the oldest player in tournament history.

Langer was also better than defending champion Tiger Woods, who celebrated a sensational victory in 2019 by winning the Masters.

Woods experienced a disaster this time on the final round on the twelfth hole.

The 44-year-old hit the ball three times into the water hazard and needed a total of ten hits for the par-three hole.

In the end, the 15-time major winner was 38th, 19 strokes behind Johnson.

The apparently poor health co-favorite and US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau did not play the role he expected, in the end, as 34th, was one punch worse (286) than flight partner Langer.
