Naturally, the Washington Wizards' selection of Danny Abdia in ninth place in the NBA Draft this morning (Thursday) was widely covered in the Israeli media.

In the US, commentators discussed him and the other players and tried to analyze the teams' moves, but Serbia also dealt with the 19-year-old basketball player quite a bit today.

Alexei Fukushevsky was selected 17 by Minnesota, but Bessarabia, which sends many players to the NBA, was not really excited. This is what all the sports media in Serbia reported today about Abdia's choice and highlighted the things he said in his show in the US (broadcast from Israel): "My father is Zofar Abdia. He was born in Kosovo, Serbia. He played basketball for the Yugoslav national team and several teams in Israel."

The Serbs were very proud of these things, especially in that Abdia defined Kosovo as part of their country.

Some of the media also liked Abdia's pin and wrote: "He wore a suit and according to tradition also the hat of the team that chose him. But there was another item that attracted a lot of attention: a pin with the flags of Israel and Serbia on the jacket."

Abdia's father, Zofar, was born in Pristina, the capital of Kosovo.

He played for the Red Star Belgrade for 10 years, before coming to Israel where he played for a variety of teams.

In an interview in Serbia a year ago, the proud father said: "I would be happy if Danny had played for the Serbian team because then he had a chance to play in the Olympics or win a medal at world and European championships. But he was born in Israel, grew up in Israel and prefers to play for the Israeli team."
