Danny Abdia

was selected tonight (Wednesday to Thursday) by the

Washington Wizards

in 9th place in the NBA Draft and made history when he became the first Israeli to be selected in the top ten in the draft of the best league in the world.

Many experts expected and predicted that the young Israeli star would be selected earlier but were surprised when 8 teams decided to prefer other players over him.

Those who were most surprised by everyone but very happy about the opportunity are the people of the

Washington Wizards

, who realized that they had a chance to pick up Abdia and carry out what the American media call "the theft of the draft."

When the moment of choice came, Washington Wizards general manager

Tommy Shepherd

was excited and enthusiastic about choosing Abdia.

According to team coach Scott Brooks, Shepherd would have looked "like he was ready to start running" immediately after the selection.

One of the American sites read: "The Washington Wizards are not used to choosing the top 10 on a regular basis, but when they do, they hope to add players like Abdia. And when they get the chance to bring in a player with his abilities, they will certainly be excited."

Scott Brooks on the energy in the room when Avdija fell to No.

9: "I love Tommy's enthusiasm. He was so fired up. I thought he was gonna be like Carl Lewis and run. For you young guys, he was one of the greatest track stars ever."

Team coach

Scott Brooks

commented on the loss of Abdia and said, "I love his toughness. I love his IQ. He goes up on the floor to compete. He's going to make our training and games better. I love guys who play with emotion."

Shepherd added about Abdia's shooting: "We let our development coaches take the time with him, watch him throw. But I don't think it will be that significant."
