This is how the MLS penalty kicks looked in the 90s (YouTube)

More and more people in the US read in recent months resumption of the decision in MLS so-called "Old School Shootouts" rather than the usual penalties. Season 2020 American Football League came five stages of the decision and eighth games of the finals, were decided in penalty kick.

When the MLS was founded in the '90s , The league leaders have decided that it will be a little different not only in the structure of the table, but also in some rules.

Thus it was decided that any game that ends without a decision - even if it is the regular season - will be decided in a penalty shootout.

But not penalty kicks, but shot-outs in the American model.

The method was already introduced during the NASL period in the 70s and 80s, but disappeared when the football league in which, among others, Pele, Cruyff, Kinalia and Spiegler played, dissolved.

The rules are very simple, but remarkably different from the traditional pendulums:

The ball stood exactly 35 yards (32 yards) from the goal and each kicker was given five seconds to subdue the goalkeeper in front of him.

The goalkeepers were given complete freedom to move wherever they wanted in order to stop the player in front of them, although they were of course forbidden to stop balls by hand off the field.

If the goalkeeper had committed an offense or touched a hand off the field, they would have moved to a regular penalty.

Teams that won on penalties in the regular season games, got a point while the loser was left with a round zero.

The misses were much more numerous than in the traditional penalty kicks, but some of the goals scored were very beautiful.

Old School Shot Outs Decision in MLS League (YouTube)

After a few years, the MLS decided to align with football all over the world and undo some of the changes they had made in their league, including eliminating those penalties.

And now there are those who miss.

"Give it back. Do everything you can to make it happen again," tweeted Josie Altidor a few weeks ago and former U.S. national team coach Bruce Arena said, "I think it was more fun.

The kickers needed more talent to conquer and there were some memorable and great fights.

I would have preferred the decision to be made that way, not just in the US but all over the world.

Former national team player Jeff Agos added: "From a personal point of view only, I can say that I really liked the old method and would like to see it come back."

His national teammate, Alexei Lalas, concluded: "We were criticized at the time and because we were insecure at the time, we abandoned our desire to be authentic. But it was fun, special and exciting. I would love to see the old method come back, it's much more football related than The static penalties from the white spot. "

The legendary former player, Marco van Basten, also showed affection for the American penalties and said in 2017: "This is a spectacular event for the spectators and it is also very interesting for the players. Kickers have more options: they can dribble, kick in front of the goalkeeper, pass him, test His reaction ... it's much more like a game move than a regular penalty. "
