Gladbach had to wait five years to the day for a second home win in the Champions League. It was worth it. Breel Embolo initially failed several times, but then made it particularly beautiful.

Borussia Mönchengladbach has taken a big step towards the Champions League round of 16.

At home in Borussia Park, coach Marco Rose's team won 4-0 (3-0) against Shakhtar Donetsk.

The goals were scored by captain Lars Stindl (17th minute of the game), Nico Elvedi (34th), Breel Embolo (45th + 1st) and Oscar Wendt (77th).

For Gladbach, it is only the second home win in the Champions League in their third participation.

The team last won against FC Sevilla on November 25, 2015, final score: 4: 2.

Before the game there was a minute's silence for Diego Maradona, who died today.

On the pitch, Gladbach started with two changes compared to the 1-1 draw against Augsburg in the league.

Marcus Thuram and Valentino Lazaro started for Hannes Wolf and Patrick Herrmann.

Right from the start, the guests found no solutions to the early pressing of the hosts.

And when Gladbach had the ball, the gaps in half of the Ukrainians were big.

The result were opportunities every five minutes.

After the break, the Gladbach team took it easy, Donetsk tried to get more offensive, but even the penultimate pass rarely made it.

Embolo at first unlucky, then artistically

Breel Embolo alone could have ensured early on that things turned out as clearly as the 6-0 (4-0) in the first leg three weeks ago at Borussia-Park.

The Swiss initially failed several times (5th, 21st, 30th, 33rd).

But then it made it especially nice.

In stoppage time in the first half, he hit an overhead kick from a corner.

Stindl with a penalty kick and Elvedi with his head had already made things clear.

In the second half, Wendt scored directly with a free kick.

Because all teammates and opponents jumped past the standard planned as a flank, the ball landed in the far corner.

Donetsk only had two chances to score in the final minutes.

After four matchdays, Gladbach is group B leader with eight points. In second place is Real Madrid with four points, who will play at Inter Milan (two points) that evening.

Donetsk also has four points.
