Diego Maradona died at the age of 60.
The news of his death causes consternation worldwide.
Many athletes express their condolences.
"A big shock for all of us," wrote England team's record goalscorer, Gary Lineker, on Twitter.
"After a blessed but troubled life, hopefully he will finally find some comfort in the hands of God."
Lothar Matthäus also spoke briefly: "My friend," wrote the world champion.
Maradona came to Munich in 2000 for Matthäus' farewell game.

The 80-year-old Pelé offered condolences to Maradona's family.
