In the first leg, Real had to tremble despite a 2-0 lead. That it didn't turn out this time was also due to Inter's Arturo Vidal. Liverpool FC lost after a heavy rotation at home to Bergamo.

Real Madrid got themselves a good starting position in the group stage of the Champions League.

After the win, Real are second behind Gladbach with seven points, Inter remain last in Group B. After six defeats and two draws, it was the first victory for Los Blancos against the Italians.

Real had only got four points from the first three games of this Champions League, Inter even two fewer.

The game was accordingly important for possible progress.

The importance was noticeable to the players in the first few minutes.

Security passes were the method of choice on both sides.

Inter then made the first mistake in the person of Nicolo Barella.

The midfielder brought Nacho down unnecessarily in the penalty area (5th minute of the game).

Inter want penalties - and lose Vidal

With Sergio Ramos out injured, Eden Hazard started.

The Belgian converted with a placed shot half way up to the right (7th).

Real pressed for a second goal.

Lucas Vázquez hit the post (13th), just under three minutes later Ferland Mendy made a wrong decision when he tried to cross again from a good position.

The Italians called for penalties after just over half an hour after Raphael Varane lightly touched Arturo Vidal's foot in the penalty area.

When referee Anthony Taylor did not decide on a penalty, Vidal complained loudly and received a yellow card.

Because he came very close to Taylor, the Chilean had to leave the field with yellow-red (33rd).

Conte brought in Ivan Perisic and Danilo D'Ambrosio in the second half and switched from back three to back four defensively.

Despite the deficit, the Italians were low and hoped for counter or standard opportunities.

After a free kick in the 52nd minute, Milan demanded another penalty.

Vázquez had held Roberto Gagliardini in his own penalty area.

Again there was no penalty - this decision was more contentious.

When Rodrygo volleyed 2-0 after a cross from the right with his first ball contact, the game was decided.

With the fourth win in as many games, Liverpool could have made the round of 16 perfect early.

In view of the many injured players and the good starting position, Jürgen Klopp started without numerous regulars.

Among other things, Joel Matip played in defense together with newcomer Kostas Tsimikas and 19-year-old Rhys and Neco Williams.

It became clear early on that the Reds are not well-rehearsed in this formation.

After just four minutes, a bad pass by Mohamed Salah gave Bergamo a first chance.

Josip Ilicic did not use this, however.

While Robin Gosens (9th) and Alejandro Gómez (11th) missed other good chances, Liverpool only got their first opportunity in the 45th minute.

Salah aimed a little too high.

After the break, it was Ilicic who scored Liverpool's first Champions League goal this season.

After a cross from Gómez, he grabbed the ball from four meters over the line (60th).

Klopp made four changes directly after conceding the goal.

Before this measure could take effect, Gosens scored the 2-0 (64th).

Gómez had previously had a lot of space and time for a cross.

In the remainder of the season, Liverpool failed to create high-profile scoring opportunities.

With nine points, the English champions are still in first place in Group D, Atalanta is third with seven points, tied behind Ajax Amsterdam.
