While the whole world cherishes the memory of Diego Maradona, who died in Argentina this week, Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank are also mourning the death of the Argentine, who in the past has repeatedly expressed support for their aspiration for independence and their struggle for statehood.
The popular media of the Arab world, Al Jazeera, mentioned quite a few quotes from Maradona in favor of the Palestinians, noting that the Argentine was an "anti-imperialist, a left-wing socialist, who supported protest movements ... he was a close friend of Cuban ruler Fidel Sectro, "Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Bolivian President Abu Morales ... and more than once we are seen wearing an anti-Bush shirt."

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zohri praised him this week and said, "We mourn the death of Maradona, who is known for his support of the Palestinian issue."
Although Maradona visited Israel several times, putting notes on the Western Wall and expressing his appreciation for the "Holy Land," he also stated that "I am the No. 1 fan of the Palestinian people, I respect them, and without any fear declare that I support their struggle."
Also, during one of the IDF operations in Gaza, Maradona said that "what Israel is doing in the Gaza Strip is a shame."

According to reports, Maradona has also been mentioned in the past as a candidate for the position of coach of the Palestinian national football team at the Asian Championships, but the move did not materialize.
In July 2018, he even met with Mahmoud Abbas in Moscow.
"In my heart, I am a Palestinian," Maradona told him at the time, before giving him a warm hug.
Al Jazeera also mentions how Maradona referred to what was happening in Syria during the country's civil war, saying: "You don't have to study at a university to understand that the United States is trying to wipe Syria off the face of the earth."
