High hurdles - but not on the tartan track

The corona lockdown is also causing problems for athletes from the Freising district.

But the supervisors by no means bury their heads in the sand.

Freising

- With higher numbers of infections, club sport moves away from the usual practice.

Those in charge of the LAG Mittlere Isar and the LC Freising must also cope with the prescribed provisions and restrictions and align their sports activities with them for their athletes in the district.

The training facilities have been closed again since the beginning of November.

And that means: At the moment - as usual at this time of the year - nobody is sweating during circuit training in the Luitpoldhalle or in the school gym of the Dom-Gymnasium.

The hurdles are currently not on the tartan track, but arise from the ban on group training in the amateur area.

There is also the uncertainty as to whether (indoor) competitions can take place in the coming months.

The “LC” in the club name is more likely to apply to “athletics under corona conditions” instead of “athletics club”.

Despite everything, the supervisors are far from burying their heads in the sand of the long jump pit.

It doesn't work at all, after all, the stadium in the Savoyer Au is closed.

Runners are looking for alternatives

In sport, good preparation is everything.

The Freising trainers and their protégés were able to gain experience in spring on how to deal with such a lockdown.

The sometimes surprisingly positive results of the LAG athletes in open-air competitions in the summer months show that the alternatives found have paid off.

The efforts in these weeks to maintain training operations are correspondingly high.

However, the situation is different because of the significantly colder weather than in spring.

Francisco Munoz is responsible for running training at the LAG.

As a native of Spain, the cold is inherently a problem for him, but he tries to offer regular training: Corona-compliant, he orders his athletes in groups of two and transfers them to the training appointment.

The units are currently taking place on the profiled forest adventure trail at the plantation, the Isardamm or the illuminated section of the Marzlinger footpath.

“There are always solutions, even if they cannot be 100 percent perfect at the moment,” says Munoz.

Instead of being indoors, he shows athletes at temperatures around zero degrees how they can improve their running technique and motivates them for the next series in the outdoor circuit on the fitness trail.

“The situation is like a roller coaster ride for me,” says the coach.

“On some days I am hopeful and happy that you can work relatively unproblematically in the medium and long-distance range and that the athletes can run outdoors alone or in pairs.

I get annoyed with others that we can't even use the stadium.

Here we could do speed training with sufficient distance ”, Munoz describes his emotional state - and adds:“ I communicate constantly with the runners so that they don't lose motivation.

Video training instead of a weight room

Gaby Hagl, who looks after a very successful sprint and all-around team at LC Freising, also confirms the high need for discussion.

“We recently achieved three podium places in the late U14 district championships.

And in the Bavarian U16 championship at the beginning of September, our relay team only missed a medal by a hundredth of a second, ”the sprint expert summarizes the latest successes.

Particularly noteworthy: All four relay participants will be able to start in this age group in the coming year and then bring precious metal to the district.

Johanna Billmeir and Lana Pavic from the quartet will still be in the U16 class in 2022.

The latter landed in the recently published annual best lists of the German Athletics Association (DLV) with her 100 meter performance of 12.56 seconds in an excellent third place among the 14-year-old girls - although she only turned 13 this year.

Lana even ranks first among the 13-year-old runners.

So that you and your colleagues stay in shape, you receive training plans for home training.

"We also meet three times a week for strength and athletic training together in a video conference room," reports Hagl.

And last but not least, she also conducts individual training sessions: so that the hopefuls can at least occasionally sprint on a tartan track with spikes, she is currently avoiding Allershausen.

The stadium is not closed here.

According to the latest Corona regulations, Hagl is even allowed to conduct unrestricted group training with her squad athletes.

While the prerequisites for this have been created in the surrounding districts or training centers remain open, such opportunities are not available in Freising.

“Basically, I support the federal government's measures to combat corona.

It is a shame, however, that no adequate training offer can be implemented for senior athletes in Freising, ”says the successful trainer.

This would result in a competitive disadvantage compared to the competition.

Little chance of competitions

It is uncertain when the next meeting will take place under competitive conditions with competitors from TSV Erding or LG Stadtwerke München.

The German indoor championships are still on the DLV competition calendar (February 20/21 in Dortmund).

But it is uncertain whether they will actually take place.

In addition, it is not clear how you can qualify for it.

Both Francisco Munoz and Gaby Hagl don't really believe in competitions at the regional level.

Andreas Knauer, the federal base manager for the Munich location, says: “Basically, of course, I would like to see indoor athletics competitions in Bavaria, but if there will be competitions in the Bavarian Athletics Association, then in my opinion all athletes should have the opportunity to take part . “The head coach is primarily grateful that - unlike in the spring - the training operations for the squad athletes were maintained.

The likelihood that “competitions for everyone” will be made possible this winter is low.

The closest athletics hall for Freising athletes, where competitions could take place, is the Werner-von-Linde-Halle in Munich.

Currently, it is only allowed to be entered by team athletes or their supervisors.

A sports festival for top athletes would be quite conceivable in terms of hygiene.

However, because the use of the competition site costs just under EUR 2,000 per day, potential organizers would have to rely on proper starting fields and corresponding participation fees.

As a result, the requirements would either have to be relaxed so that the “second row” is eligible to start, or the competition would have to be subsidized, for example by the association.

Serious consequences threaten

Gaby Hagl is not only a trainer at LC Freising, but also responsible for membership management.

She is already concerned about the numerous layoffs, especially in the field of children's athletics.

And running coach Munoz fears: "I will lose athletes if the conditions remain the same as in November for several months." The DLV has now even decided on a petition to support recreational and popular sports - and warns of the serious consequences of sedentarism in view of the ban on sports People who want to move in a club.

The clubs want to counteract this - as well as they can under the current conditions.
