Swedish justice on Wednesday ordered the referral to court of a professional footballer accused of corruption in the context of a sports bet.
He is charged with having willfully received a yellow card in exchange for a bribe from punters during a first division match.
The facts date back to May 2019, during a match in which the Swedish player - whose name was not mentioned by the prosecution but who was playing at IF Elfsborg (1st division) - was fined yellow card.
“Shortly after the game, the player received a loan of a large sum of money from people who had bet on a warning in that game,” prosecutor Staffan Edlund said in a statement.
This "loan" amounted to 300,000 crowns, or about 30,000 euros, according to the indictment.
Another targeted player
The player has been charged with "passive bribery" and "violation of the law on gambling" and faces up to two years in prison during his trial.
In the case, two other people will also stand trial on suspicion of paying the bribe in question and violating Swedish gambling law.
In addition, the prosecution also referred to court another lower division player, who allegedly accepted bribes for six games - all lost.
