In the most difficult year, the newspaper AS managed to bring together some of the best Spanish athletes in history on Thursday.

Rafa Nadal, Pau Gasol and Iker Casillas were some of the protagonists of the 14th edition of the As Sports Awards, which recognize sporting excellence.

The award ceremony was held at the Teatro Real in Madrid, among strict sanitary measures, in an act that also served to pay tribute to two recently deceased sports personalities, Diego Armando Maradona and Michael Robinson.

Also as a tribute to all the victims of the coronavirus and to those people who are suffering its health or economic consequences, to whom Vicente Jiménez, director of AS, dedicated a memory in his speech.

"Ten months ago we left the newsroom and it is still empty, but our commitment to honor the sport remains intact and will continue to be so," said Jiménez.

The As Sports Awards rewarded altruistic work through various initiatives by Pau Gasol, who was involved in the collection of financial funds;

the sailor and Olympic medalist Iker Martínez, who sewed masks;

Mati Martínez, a footballer for the Albacete Foundation and a nurse who, in the worst months of the pandemic, treated coronavirus patients;

and the canoeist Saúl Craviotto, who returned to his work as a policeman.

"This award is one more motivation to face what remains of this difficult year," explained Pau Gasol by videoconference.

The gala was presented by Dani Garrido, director of the Sports Carousel of the Ser.

The event also served to look to the future.
