This ranking is a reference, even if it is not as prestigious as that of France Football's “Golden Ball” which is not postponed in 2020 because of the Covid pandemic.
The organization delivered its verdict for the year 2020 this Saturday and the French are particularly in the spotlight.
A Frenchwoman stands out in particular: the referee Stéphanie Frappart.
La Francilienne is named “best referee in the world” without distinction between men and women.
It is the first time that a woman is thus designated, in front of all the men.
On Wednesday evening, the Ile-de-France had already become the first woman to lead a men's Champions League match (Juventus Turin - Dynamo Kiev).
His performance was praised by the Italian press, however little known to spare the referees.
Three months earlier, on September 6, she had also become the first female central referee of an international match in official men's competition (Malta-Latvia in the League of Nations).
To complete a record which becomes impressive, Stéphanie Frappart was also named best referee of the 2019 Women's World Cup and referee of the United States-Netherlands final.
She was once again a pioneer by being the first female central referee of a Ligue 1 (Amiens-Strasbourg, April 28, 2019) and Ligue 2 (Niort-Brest, August 8, 2014) match.
Deschamps ahead of Martinez and Luis Enrique
Didier Deschamps was elected best coach of a men's team.
This is the second time he has received this honorary trophy.
