After losing as expected 3: 1 to Bayern Munich the champions in the previous round, Stuttgart enjoyed a successful penalty from Silas Wamangitoka to take the lead in the 31st minute.
In extra time the Congolese striker was left completely free in front of an empty net after a mistake by the goalkeeper.
Instead of scoring immediately he waited a few seconds as an act of disdain and scored before absorbing a yellow on this move.
Davey Zelka just shrank backwards just before the final whistle.
This victory raised the visitors to eighth place.
Berman is stuck in 12th place with an advantage of only 4 points from the red line.
