Racing 92-Connacht: Finn Russell is (finally) back

2020-12-12T10:56:44.679Z

The Scottish player had not appeared with the Ile-de-France club since the European final lost to Exeter.

From one European Cup to another.

Finn Russell had not worn the Racing 92 jersey since the sad defeat in the Champions Cup final in Bristol against Exeter (31-27) on October 17th.

The Scottish opening half makes his comeback this Sunday at Paris La Défense Arena for the first day of the European Cup, new version, against the Irish province of Connacht (4:15 p.m., France 2).

After the defeat, the third in the European final, the opener had spun in Scotland for international matches before injuring his groin in the first meeting.

He then returned to the Ile-de-France club for a long convalescence of almost two months.

It could have ended in displacement of Top 14 last weekend against Bordeaux-Bègles (12-17).

But the terrible weather conditions, the wind and the soft ground had dissuaded the staff of the Sky and White from throwing Russell in the deep end.

The warm and cozy cocoon of the Arena de Nanterre will suit him better.

A slightly tarnished status

With the new formula of the Champions Cup which looks more and more like a sprint with four games to go to reach the quarter-finals (against six previously), Finn Russell will find an ideal field of expression.

The opener must restore a somewhat dented status after a very mixed performance in the final against Exeter.

Like other executives of Racing 92, he had not been able to weigh enough on the meeting, especially in the final minutes.

And his pass intercepted a few meters from the English goal had resulted in a murderous attempt against.

In short, Russell owes a rematch.

Facing Connacht, he will pair up with Teddy Iribaren who also had a nightmarish final due to a thigh injury.
