The world anti-doping agency Wada registered a total of 1923 doping cases worldwide for 2018.

This is an increase of 6.5 percent compared to the previous year, announced the Wada in its annual report.

In 2017 there were 1804 cases, 13 percent more than in 2016.

  • Athletes from 117 nations were responsible for the doping cases, a total of 92 sports are affected.

According to Wada, most of the doping cases identified were in bodybuilding, followed by cycling and athletics.

Football was responsible for four percent of doping cases discovered.

The largest group of the blown athletes comes from Russia, closely followed by Italy and France.

"The work of Wada and a number of anti-doping organizations in the field of investigations and the success of whistleblower programs such as› Speak Up! ‹Are paying off for the protection of clean sport," said Wada General Director Olivier Niggli .

Niggli also emphasized the importance of training controls and unannounced controls outside of competitions "as methods of detection and deterrence".

The annual report on violations gives a good insight into the results of the testing programs carried out by anti-doping organizations around the world.

The hit rate of less than one percent also shows that many doping cases go undetected.

Anonymous surveys of competitive athletes had suggested a much higher doping rate in the past.
