Negotiations have started between
Canal +
and the LFP!
Expected as a hero after the defection of Mediapro, the encrypted channel would have made an oral proposal to the Professional Football League in order to recover the TV rights of Ligue 1 until 2024, reveals
L'Équipe on
Thursday.
The offer of the historic championship broadcaster would be 590 million euros: 490 million euros to broadcast the most beautiful posters, and a "guaranteed minimum" of 100 million euros for a channel "intended to replace
Téléfoot
";
this could be
beIN Sports
, which is distributed by
Canal +
, even if the discussions between the two chains have not yet concluded.
In addition, the proposal would include 100 million euros in potential bonuses per year.
That is a total sum of 690 million euros for the elite of French football.
As a reminder, during the last call for tenders for the period 2020-2024, the LFP had obtained 1.153 billion euros for the rights of professional football (Ligue 1 and Ligue 2).

An advance of 200 million euros?
Also according to information from the sports daily,
Canal +
would be ready to provide an advance of 200 million euros to the clubs for the 2020-2021 season, in order to help them cope with a very complicated situation on the financial level between the lack of gain TV rights, ticket offices or even due to a change in the transfer market.
Of course, this amount "would then be deducted from the payments planned for the next three seasons" specifies
L'Équipe
.
Telefoot
, the Mediapro channel, will broadcast the matches of the championship, if necessary, until January 31, 2021. The LFP therefore has until that date to negotiate a better price with Canal +.
Clubs would expect at least € 800m
But is the
Canal +
proposal
, which can go up to 690 million euros per year, sufficient for the clubs?
In a recent interview, Jean-Pierre Caillot, the president of Reims said he hoped to sell the TV rights for at least 800 million euros: “Today, the context is complicated, but I can not imagine that we can go down under 800 million euros tomorrow, he explained to
AFP
earlier this week.
There is no objective: in a negotiation, the truth is the check.
I hope for all the clubs that we will quickly find a solution with a historical broadcaster where we do not depreciate the product [...] It would be a mistake to sell our rights to Canal + under cover of the emergency, and d 'on the other hand, it would not be a good thing for Canal + to take them too low because that would mean that the product does not have the value at which they want to sell it to their subscribers ”.
Negotiations should be hectic in the coming weeks.
