The women of FC Göteborg have to look for a new football club: The Swedish champions withdraw their team - because the competition is financially too strong. "Like a bolt from the blue," says one player.

The Swedish women's soccer champion dissolves his team.

This was announced by those responsible at FC Göteborg on Tuesday.

The reason: You can no longer keep up financially with the big European and Swedish clubs after they have started to put more money into the women's teams.

The championship that year was the club's first, having finished second four times before.

Gothenburg also won the Swedish Cup three times.

The club does not have a men's team.

Now the players' contracts have been terminated - just under a month after the club's greatest triumph.

"I am convinced that in order to compete internationally, a team must be an equal part of an elite club and have the same resources available as men's football," said club boss Peter Bronsman.

In the Champions League, Gothenburg was eliminated two weeks ago.

In the first round the team had lost 1: 2 and 0: 3 against the English club Manchester City.

Last season Gothenburg competed in the premier class against the German club Bayern Munich and was also defeated.

"Unexpected"

Bronsman said clubs like Lyon, PSG, Juventus and others have recognized the value of women's football and are making huge investments.

"We can't keep up with that," said the club, which had previously financed itself primarily through the sponsorship of a local brewery.

But that's over.

However, the club will not be completely wound up: the youth teams will continue to play.

However, the professional players have to look for a new club.

Nine Swedish internationals had played for Gothenburg, and US world champion Christen Press also played there in 2012.

“It feels like bolt from the blue,” said Gothenburg midfielder Elin Rubensson of the Swedish side fotbollskanalen.se: “I had no idea, nobody had that. I was really shocked, sad and confused.

I didn't get it. "Former Göteborg player Yael Averbuch West wrote on Twitter:" It shows how fragile women's game is. "

It's not the first time that a successful club has surprisingly left the Swedish league.

Tyresö FF, which then had Brazilian star player Marta in its ranks, was eliminated in 2014 after the club's parent company was threatened with bankruptcy.

A month earlier, the team had played in the Champions League final against Wolfsburg.
