Anze Lanisek won the qualification for the New Year's jumping at the Four Hills Tournament of ski jumpers.
The Slovenian prevailed on Thursday in Garmisch-Partenkirchen ahead of World Cup leader Halvor Egner Granerud from Norway and Markus Eisenbichler.
Lanisek was very thin at 139.0 meters from Granerud.
At 143.0 meters, he achieved by far the largest distance, but did not set a telemark.
Eisenbichler landed after 135.5 meters.
The second best German was Karl Geiger in fifth place.
In addition to the two German top jumpers, seven other athletes (out of twelve) from the team of national coach Stefan Horngacher qualified for the knockout duels of the best 50 ski jumpers this Friday - albeit with a large gap to the two top people.
Third best German was Richard Freitag in 21st place ahead of Severin Freund (23).
Olympic champion Andreas Wellinger was eliminated.
Lindvik fails in Garmisch
Last year's winner Marius Lindvik could not take part in the qualification.
The 22-year-old has severe toothache and traveled to a dentist in Innsbruck, as the organizers announced on Thursday shortly before the start of qualification.
This means that the Norwegian will also be out of the competition on January 1st.
Lindvik finished third in Karl Geiger's opening win in Oberstdorf on Tuesday and was therefore well placed in the overall standings.
He had already complained of a toothache in Oberstdorf.
Last year he won in Garmisch and Innsbruck and was second in the overall tour ranking behind the Polish winner Dawid Kubacki.
Next corona case on the tour
As the organizers announced on Thursday, a Russian athlete tested positive for Covid-19 as part of the routine controls in Garmisch.
“The athlete concerned is in quarantine.
In addition, three other members of the Russian ski jumping team, including one other athlete, were classified as Category I contacts and also placed in quarantine, ”said Martin Fleckenstein, head of the Medical Committee of the New Year's Ski Jumping Organizing Committee.
The further procedure will be coordinated with the authorities.
At the start of the tour in Oberstdorf, there had already been a positive corona test with Klemens Muranka from Poland.
As a result, the entire team was initially excluded, but after several additional tests, all Poles were then re-admitted.
