Former Lyon coach Bruno Genesio is no longer the coach of Beijing Guoan in the Chinese football championship where the Croatian Slaven Bilic succeeds him.

End of the adventure.

He signed in July 2019, just after four seasons at the head of Olympique Lyonnais.

It had been announced in England but it was in China that Bruno Genesio had chosen to bounce back.

The adventure ended on Wednesday.

“After friendly negotiations, Mr. Bruno Genesio will no longer hold the post of head coach of the Beijing Guoan team after his contract expires.

Slaven Bilic and his team are committed with the Beijing Guoan Football Club until the end of the year 2022 ”, indicates the club of the capital in a message published on the Chinese social network Weibo.

Under the leadership of Genesio (54), the Beijing club reached the semi-finals of the last season of the Chinese Super League (CSL) where he was eliminated in early November by Guangzhou Evergrande (3-1), trained by Fabio Cannavaro.

The previous season, Bruno Genesio, who arrived in the summer of 2019, during the exercise, had already failed near the title, in second place two points behind Guangzhou.

Croatian Slaven Bilic, sacked three weeks ago from his post as coach of West Bromwich Albion (where he arrived in 2019, especially after having shone at the head of West Ham), stuck in the penultimate place of the English Premier League, finds a point of fall.

CSL's new season is due to start in the spring, likely in a health bubble due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Like what Genesio had experienced during the recent playoffs.

On

RMC

, he told his daily newspaper in October: “Since July 19 exactly, we have been in Suzhou, near Shanghai.

We stayed there until September 29 to play the 14 matches in our group before the quarter-finals.

Imagine a military barracks with eight hotels and eight training grounds.

Each team has its own field.

We remained confined without any contact with the outside.

No one has entered or left the bubble (…) We do our training, we eat, the staff watches videos, we have meetings… Living so long in self-sufficiency is a strange ordeal.

And that makes you put certain things into perspective, when I see that we are complaining in France… I'm lucky to have a great group and staff.

The Chinese players have for the most part a Buddhist philosophy, they relativize, take things with calm and serenity… ”Bruno Genesio assured:“ I will not be the same when I return… ”
