In Qatar, in the event of a head injury, an additional substitution will be allowed for the first time at an international tournament. This should protect the players - and take the pressure off the medical staff.

At the Club World Cup in Qatar, an additional substitution will be allowed to protect the player in the event of a head injury.

The world football association Fifa announced on Friday.

After the body responsible for the rules of world football, Ifab, had given approval in mid-December, the association has now confirmed the procedure for the tournament from February 1st to 11th.

"In the case of actual or suspected concussions," the procedure will be used for the first time in an international competition, according to a FIFA statement.

The Ifab had suggested that affected players no longer have to continue playing in the event of an actual or suspected concussion, but that their team would not suffer any numerical disadvantage if all switching options were already exhausted.

This could prevent players from possibly suffering another head injury.

It also reduces the pressure on medical staff to make a quick decision.

According to the rulers, the now decided test phase is the result of months of consultations with medical experts, team doctors, player representatives, coaches, competition organizers, referees and rules experts.

At the Club World Cup, up to five normal substitutions are allowed per team and game - plus one more in the event of a head injury "regardless of the substitutions already made".

Other leagues or competitions can also test the effects of additional changes in suspected concussions.

The English Premier League had already shown interest.

The German Football League (DFL) also "welcomed" the opportunity in December and announced that it would "deal with the exact specifications and a possible implementation in the Bundesliga and 2nd Bundesliga".
