The decision:

Ten shooters had already scored on penalties, then substitute Munich Marc Roca straightened the ball - and failed because of Kiel's goalkeeper Ioannis Gelios.

Fin Bartels started as the sixth player from Kiel and turned safely against national goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

As in the last second round defeat, Bayern failed again on penalties.

This was last the case in November 2000 at 1. FC Magdeburg.

The result: For the

first time in 20 years, FC Bayern Munich has not made it to the round of 16 of the DFB Cup.

In the second division Holstein Kiel, the record cup winners lost 5-6 on penalties.

After extra time it was 2: 2 (2: 2, 1: 1).

Time travel with the outfit:

US musician Pharrell Williams designed jerseys for FC Bayern, the sale of which brought in 100,000 euros for the SOS Children's Villages, among other things.

In Kiel, the FCB professionals wore it for the first time in a competitive game.

The design was very reminiscent of the early 1990s, when Munich almost relegated from the Bundesliga with players like Jan Wouters, Brian Laudrup and Mazinho.

There are better omens.

The first half:

Most recently, even Bundesliga basement children were able to put Bayern into trouble, why not the third in the second division?

Kiel tried to keep Bayern away from their own goal, which worked well.

After Serge Gnabry's opening goal (14th minute), it was 20 minutes before Thomas Müller (35th) had another chance.

This time it was recognized on the sidelines (probably wrongly) what aroused Müller and irritated his colleagues.

As usual from previous games, a good pass from his own half was enough to outsmart the Bayern defense: Bartels overcame Neuer with a shot into the left corner (37th).

No VAR, no offside:

Gnabry's opening goal would not have been recognized in the Bundesliga.

However, because no video referee was used in the second round of the DFB Cup, the offside position of the national player in the run-up to the goal remained unpunished.

The day before, in the match between Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt, there were scenes that made the controversial VAR even more attractive.

Bartels vs Neuer: The

Kiel native Bartels has been playing for Holstein again since last summer.

He is now 33 years old, had played against Bayern twelve times - and lost twelve times.

In 2008, half an eternity ago, he was even allowed to play in the U21 national team once.

In the game against Denmark, Neuer was in the goal of the DFB-Elf.

After that, the career paths of the two separated significantly.

The cup evening still had a punch line open for the two of them.

The second half:

Leroy Sané curled a free kick over the wall and into the corner from a half-right position.

The early 2: 1 for the guests (48th) would have answered Alexander Mühling almost 2: 2 just two minutes later, but his shot went just over the Bayern goal.

The team of the young coach Ole Werner continued to act courageously and playfully, a class difference was not discernible.

It was not until the 66th minute that Jamal Musiala forced Kiel's goalkeeper to make another strong save.

The deserved equalization in stoppage time: Hauke Wahl scored 2-2 in a header attempt with his shoulder (90 + 5).

He had to go again:

An away game at a second division should be an opportunity to give the long-term attacker Robert Lewandowski a break of 90 minutes.

Nothing came of it.

In the 78th minute, Flick was forced to secure the result, but still bring the Bundesliga shooter king.

It was a return after 3,258 days, as the Kielers had calculated in the run-up to the game: At the beginning of February 2012, the Pole won the Holstein Cup with Borussia Dortmund 4-0.

Back then, almost nine years later (during the game) he didn't score.

The decision:

After one of the Munich team's deliberate extensions, but without many chances, the penalty shoot-out had to decide.

The first ten shooters converted all, only Lewandowski was a little lucky with his penalty that Gelios had to let the ball pass.

The Kiel goalkeeper then parried against Roca, Bartels set the end point.

Darmstadt is waiting:

With whom Holstein Kiel or FC Bayern would get to do in the round of the last sixteen, it was already clear before the game, which was moved from December to January, that a home game against second division Darmstadt 98 is the next task Holstein Kiel must provide.

The match will take place on February 2nd or 3rd.

The Kielers are still missing three wins until the final and the chance of their first cup victory.

They were German champions once before - in 1912. The victory against the triple winner FC Bayern should be just behind in the club's chronicle.
