TV rights: the Football League resolves to relaunch a call for tenders

As Maxime Saada, chairman of the management board of Canal + demanded, the LFP will re-launch a call for tenders for the rights next week.

The Professional Football League (LFP) has decided to relaunch a call for tenders next week for the audiovisual rights to its championship, as Maxime Saada, the chairman of the board of Canal +, had invited in an interview with Figaro.

The board of directors of the LFP, which met Thursday, January 14 in the afternoon, took an hour to validate the principle of a consultation on the lots held by Mediapro, the defaulting broadcaster.

The administrators of the League had no real choice and followed the president of the body, Vincent Labrune, who pushed for this solution.

The LFP will therefore put back on the market the famous lot 1 that Canal + is eyeing and which concerns the Sunday evening match including the ten best posters of Ligue 1.

According to some sources, the encrypted channel is also interested in lot 2, that is to say the meetings of Friday at 9 p.m. and Saturday at 5 p.m.

On the other hand, the leaders of professional football refuse to launch a global call for tenders and to include in it the famous lot 3 (with the matches of Saturday 9 p.m., and Sunday 5 p.m.) acquired by BeIN Sports in 2018 and then retroceded to Canal +.

A lowered valuation

The encrypted channel had wanted to return this lot to the League, last Monday, but the latter refused its return.

The LFP recalled that it was assigned to the Qatari channel in accordance with the rules established by the Sports Code and the Competition Code.

In doing so, the League could expose itself to legal remedies from Canal +.

The reopening of competition should go fairly quickly, around two weeks.

Which would mean that French football could have a new broadcaster, most certainly Canal +, from the beginning of February.

It remains to be seen how much will be valued for the rights for which Mediapro had bet 814 million euros.

And what will be the position of BeIN Sports, if the channel recovers its share, paid 330 million euros two years ago?

In any case, French football, rich with 1.156 billion euros two years ago, will be the big loser of this new call for tenders.
