The women's dominoes team, which was formed only about a decade ago, will travel to Italy this coming Sunday to take part in the pre-Olympic tournament for the first time.

The Israeli team is the team with the lowest average age in the tournament (20) - with the youngest player 17 years old and the oldest 28 years old. All the team players are graduates of projects of Athena, the center for the promotion of women's sports at the Wingate Institute.

The very participation in the competition is a significant leap forward for the team when the goal, according to the team coach, Dmitry Mevroots, is to gain important international experience and play against the best teams in Europe in this industry.

For the first time since the team was re-established it will play without its captain and star, Reef Strogo.

Strogo planned to retire after the pre-Olympic tournament but the fact that the Corona crisis significantly delayed the tournament prompted Strogo to retire from the national uniform and not take part in the tournament.

All the players have undergone corona tests while the team is waiting for answers and hope not to be surprised with players who will be diagnosed as positive.

Also participating in the tournament: the Netherlands, Italy, Slovakia, Hungary, Greece, Kazakhstan and France when only 2 will advance to the Olympics.

Although it is a relatively new team, the team has already reached achievements: it qualified for the European Senior Championships in 2018 (finished in 10th place) and also in 2020 (finished in 9th place).

Ayelet Peres, captain of the team: "It is a great achievement for us to play in the pre-Olympic Games. We are a very young team and for half of us it will be the first senior tournament. However, in recent months we have prepared a lot for the tournament "The best for the flag. A big thank you, of course, to the Ministry of Sports, the Olympic Committee, the Wingate Institute and the Athena Project, who accompany the team on a daily basis."

"We have the youngest team in the tournament so we have to keep gaining experience at the highest levels in the world. We are in a long process of which we will want to qualify for the Olympics in the future. "Because of the Korna. Our realistic goals are to finish in 5-8 places and compete there against teams that are ranked above us. For me it is a great challenge to compete in a pre-Olympic tournament and the bigger challenge will be to see our hard work in the last four years bear fruit."
