The Argentine golf star Ángel Cabrera, wanted by an international arrest warrant, was arrested on Thursday in the posh Leblon district in Rio de Janeiro.

This was confirmed by two investigators independently of the AP news agency.

Two of his ex-wives had filed charges against the 51-year-old in his home country Argentina for the use of violence and threats.

Because the two-time major winner had recently gone underground in the USA, Interpol had triggered the manhunt.

Cabrera, who became the first Argentine to win the US Open in 2007 and the US Masters in 2009, left his country last August to participate in golf events in the USA without the judicial authorization required by the lawsuits.

However, because his tourist visa there had expired, he flew on to Brazil at the end of December.

After the arrest, the Argentine authorities immediately issued an extradition request.

His ex-wife Cecila Torres had filed criminal charges against Cabrera in 2017 and 2018 after beatings, threats and even a theft.

Silvia Rivadero, the mother of his two eldest daughters, is said to have threatened murder.

There are also other charges against him.
